SVOP Course

This is a Transport Canada approved course for small vessel captains and crew.  3 to 4 days (26 hours inclusive of exams).

It covers minimum training for owners and operators of small commercial vessels, specifically: Workboats and passenger vessels up to 5 GT (~8.5 meters),and fishing vessels of up to 15 GT (~12 meters),

Operating in Canadian waters on a Near Coastal class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage (within 25 nautical miles of shore).

This includes Whale Watching Boats, Fishing Guide Boats, Charters, Workboats, Water Taxis, Rescue Boats, Fishing Vessels, and more.


The goals of the SVOP course is to provide participants with:

    • the legal aspects and requirements.
    • vessel hull types and configurations
    • mooring of a vessel and related seamanship work
    • manoeuvring a vessel
    • safe navigation and collision prevention
    • maintaining a vessel’s stability
    • safe working practices and safety culture
    • marine weather and marine forecasts
    • use of radar for navigation safety
    • Determination of a vessel’s position using electronic navigation aids
    • Use of marine charts and nautical publications to plan and execute a voyage
    • Use of a magnetic compass for taking bearings and for steering
    • The Canadian buoyage system
    • Dealing with emergency situations
    • The Search and Rescue resources
    • Pollution prevention
    • The Canadian Shipping Act, 2001 and the Canadian regulations
    • Departure preparation
    • Quick reference checklists

For an owner/operator to fully be qualified they will also need to have Marine Emergency Duties SDV-BS; ROC-M VHF Radio operator certificate and Marine Basic First Aid.
